Mistral AI’s news and media highlights

Mistral AI, a Paris-based artificial intelligence startup, today unveiled its latest advanced AI model capable of processing both images and text. The new model, called Pixtral 12B, employs about 12 billion parameters and is the first of its models capable of vision encoding, making it possible for it to “see” images alongside text. The new model is based on Mistral’s Nemo 12B, an AI model previously released by the company capable of understanding text, with the addition of a 400 million-parameter vision adapter.
The well-funded French AI startup Mistral, known for its powerful open source AI models, launched two new entries in its growing family of large language models (LLMs) today: a math-based model and a code generating model for programmers and developers based on the new architecture known as Mamba developed by other researchers late last year. Mamba seeks to improve upon the efficiency of the transformer architecture used by most leading LLMs by simplifying its attention mechanisms.
Mistral AI has raised €600 million ($644 million) from a slew of financial and tech investors as the French artificial intelligence startup starts to take on bigger global players such as OpenAI. The investment gives the company, formed in early 2023, a €5.8 billion valuation, according to a person familiar with the terms, who asked not to be identified discussing private information. Venture capital firm General Catalyst led the round, which included a number of prior investors such as Andreessen Horowitz and Lightspeed Venture Partners, the company said in a statement on Tuesday. Corporate backers including Nvidia Corp., Samsung Venture Investment Corp., Cisco Systems Inc. and International Business Machines Corp. also joined.
Today, Databricks, the fast growing data infrastructure company led by Ali Ghodsi, announced a partnership with Paris-based Mistral, the well-funded startup that’s made waves in the global AI community with its growing family of highly-performant large language models (LLMs) — many of them, open sourced. Under the engagement, Databricks is investing an undisclosed amount in Mistral, adding to its series A round, and bringing select Mistral LLMs to its data intelligence platform.
