Mistral’s new Codestral code completion model races up third-party charts

Mistral has updated its open-source coding model Codestral — which is proving popular among coders — extending the competition for coding-focused models targeted to developers. In a blog post, the company said it has upgraded the model with more efficient architecture to create Codestral 25.01, a model Mistral promises will be the “clear leader for coding in its weight class” and twice as fast as the previous version.

Europe’s Mistral expands in Silicon Valley in hunt for AI staff

Mistral, Europe’s most valuable artificial intelligence start-up, is ramping up its US expansion in an effort to compete with Silicon Valley rivals for AI talent. Paris-based Mistral is building out an office in Palo Alto, California, as it looks beyond its European roots for engineers and scientists, as well as expanding its US sales team. One of Mistral’s three co-founders, Guillaume Lample, is also weighing a potential move from Paris, according to two people familiar with the company’s thinking. However, another person close to the company said no decision has yet been made.

Mistral unveils Pixtral 12B, a multimodal AI model that can process both text and images

Mistral AI, a Paris-based artificial intelligence startup, today unveiled its latest advanced AI model capable of processing both images and text. The new model, called Pixtral 12B, employs about 12 billion parameters and is the first of its models capable of vision encoding, making it possible for it to “see” images alongside text. The new model is based on Mistral’s Nemo 12B, an AI model previously released by the company capable of understanding text, with the addition of a 400 million-parameter vision adapter.
