Butlr’s news and media highlights

Butlr, an MIT Media Lab spinout, raised $35 million in Series B funding to expand its sensor technology and anonymous data platform for understanding human behavior in buildings. The funding will support growth in senior care facilities and other enterprise customers.
Butlr, a Burlingame, CA-based physical AI (PAI) startup, raised $38M in Series B funding. Backers included Pacific Alliance Venture, GS Futures, DNX Ventures, Ray Stata, Joi Ito, Carrier, and Qualcomm. The company intends to use the funds to expand its presence, mainly in senior care communities. Led by CEO Honghao Deng, Butlr is an MIT Media Lab spinout that offers a technology platform to understand subtle movements in a space, accurately discern activity, occupancy, indoor location, and body posture yet is purposely designed to be incapable of capturing personally identifiable information.
In an era when organizations are striving and sometimes struggling to adapt to hybrid work and other work-related cultural shifts, Butlr has stepped in to help create more efficient and enjoyable workspaces. The founders of Butlr, a spinoff from the MIT Media Lab, don’t want companies to design or redesign their offices based on guesses, instinct, or surveys alone. Instead, they want to create smarter, more sustainable spaces using wireless thermal sensors that provide anonymous data about occupancy and activity—like when an eight-person conference room is mostly being used by just one or two people, or when an empty office is being heated or cooled, or when a company is leasing too much (or too little) space.
Butlr Technologies Inc., which styles itself an “artificial intelligence of things” startup, today announced that it has raised additional funding from Qualcomm Ventures LLC and launched the next generation of its Heatic wireless sensors. Founded in 2019 as a spinoff from the MIT Media Lab, Butlr offers a people monitoring platform that uses body heat to detect occupancy, headcount, body posture and activity. This data can be used to generate accurate, real-time and historical spatial insights.
