Hermeus’ news and media highlights

Hermeus unveiled its new high-speed, jet-powered Quarterhorse Mk 1 aircraft today, taking another small step toward the Atlanta-based startup’s goal of producing the world’s first reusable hypersonic plane. The uncrewed Mk 1 aircraft is set to become the first Hermeus-produced aircraft to take to the skies during flight tests at Edwards Air Force base scheduled later this year, which are aimed at proving it can safely conduct high-speed take off and landings.
Hypersonic aircraft company Hermeus has demonstrated turbojet to ramjet transition within its engine, Chimera. This is one of the most important technological feats to making operational hypersonic flight a reality, the company has said. Chimera is a turbine-based combined cycle engine (TBCC) – which basically means it’s a hybrid between a turbojet and a ramjet. The ability to switch between these two modes allows Hermeus’ first aircraft, Quarterhorse, to take off from a regular runway and then accelerate up to high-Mach speeds.
Hermeus, a startup building a hypersonic aircraft capable of traveling five times the speed of sound, has completed a major milestone in engine testing. The company successfully demonstrated that its engine can transition from turbojet—like what’s used in passenger aircraft—to ramjet, a much more powerful engine technology. Earlier this year, the company raised a $100M Series B to complete the development of this aircraft, which has its first flights slated for 2023.
Hypersonic aircraft startup Hermeus on Thursday announced a $100 million round of funding that it says will help complete development of its first prototype aircraft and build out its fleet of high speed jets. Hermeus’ fundraising was led by venture capitalist Sam Altman, and joined by Peter Thiel’s Founders Fund and In-Q-Tel, both new investors. The round included existing investors Khosla Ventures, Canaan Partners, Bling Capital, and Revolution’s Rise of the Rest. The company declined CNBC’s request to disclose its valuation following the raise.
