GoFundMe’s news and media highlights

A trucker-led protest against vaccine mandates in Canada has raised several million dollars on a Christian crowdfunding site after being removed from GoFundMe, sparking debate over how online platforms moderate campaigns. The mayor of Ottawa declared a state of emergency over a week-long protest led by truck drivers over Covid-19 restrictions, three days after GoFundMe blocked fundraising for the “Freedom Convoy”.
Some U.S. Republicans on Saturday vowed to investigate GoFundMe's decision to take down a page accepting donations in support of protesting truckdrivers, opens new tab in Canada, although GoFundMe early Saturday already said it would simply refund all donations. The Freedom Convoy 2022 began as a movement against a Canadian vaccine requirement for cross-border truckers, but has turned into a rallying point against public health measures in Canada. It has also gained increasing support among U.S. Republicans, including former President Donald Trump.
In the wake of escalating violence against Asians in the U.S., crowdfunding site GoFundMe collaborated with independent film director Bao Nguyen to produce a short film that shines a light on the historical issue of anti-Asian racism in the country — with the participation of Olivia Munn, Ken Jeong, Lisa Ling, and other entertainment and cultural leaders. Filmed in L.A. earlier this month, “#StopAsianHate Together” shows a candlelight vigil with speakers recounting the history of violence against the Asian American and Pacific Islander community, including the horrific killing of six women of Asian descent in the Atlanta area last month. (Watch the 3-minute film above or at this link on GoFundMe’s YouTube channel.)
Working with Stripe further simplifies the fundraising experience on GoFundMe by helping to power a smooth donation experience, the swift withdrawal of donations by fundraiser organizers, and advanced trust and safety operations. The economic and social upheaval of the last 12 months has driven an extraordinary amount of need and generosity on the GoFundMe platform. GoFundMe recently announced more than $10 billion has been raised from over 150 million donations for people, causes, and organizations worldwide.
