Aqua Metals and 6K Energy have signed an agreement to create the first sustainable supply chain for lithium-ion battery manufacturing in the U.S. The companies plan to co-locate a facility in Jackson, Tennessee, which will produce low-carbon cathode active materials for batteries using domestically sourced materials from end-of-life batteries and manufacturing scrap.
Aqua Metals, 6K Energy to develop low-carbon battery materials
Aqua Metals and 6K Energy have partnered to develop low-carbon battery materials. The collaboration aims to create a domestic low-carbon supply chain for critical battery materials and improve production methods for sustainable lithium-ion batteries. The companies will use Aqua Metals' patented AquaRefining approach to convert critical metals into battery-grade cathode active material precursors (pCAMs). The process, which replaces chemical catalysts with clean electricity and reduces water consumption, will first convert virgin critical metals and later recycled materials into battery-grade pCAMs. Aqua Metals also operates a lithium battery recycling facility.
