Varo Money was founded in 2015 by Assaf Guery, Colin Walsh, Mykola Klymenko, and Roger Duinen. In 2021, CEO Walsh told reporters that going IPO is "definitely on the roadmap for us as I think there's a ton of value we can create as a public company when the time is right."
Varo is a fintech company that began as a mobile banking platform, becoming in 2020 the first U.S. digital bank to be granted a national banking charter. This means that while Varo has no physical branches, the company is subject to federal regulation and is insured by the FDIC. The company has raised more than $900 million in venture capital funding from investors including Lone Pine Capital, Warburg Pincus, Tribe-V, The Rise Fund, and Gallatin Point Capital. A 2021 funding round raised $510 million in fresh capital, increasing the company's valuation to $2.5 billion.
