SiFive’s news and media highlights

AI processor maker BrainChip, which makes ultra-low-power neuromorphic chips and supporting software, and SiFive, founder of the RISC-V computing genre, announced they have combined their respective technologies to offer chip designers optimized artificial intelligence and machine learning for edge computing.
To date, the company has raised over $350M to fuel its designed for the top performance processor intellectual property market. SiFive will use the funds to invest in global hiring, new product development, and the software ecosystem. SiFive is substantially accelerating the development of the company’s RISC-V products as it tries to broaden the reach of processors into multiple markets. SiFive is beefing up its future roadmap, and ecosystem to fulfill the potential that RISC-V has for SiFive’s customers.
Chip technology firm SiFive Inc on Thursday said it has sped up its computing core designs by 40% and now has a headcount of 700 employees, with plans to double its staff by next year. The Silicon Valley startup is aiming to challenge the dominance of Arm Ltd in supplying key parts of computing chip designs that are used throughout the semiconductor industry. Arm licenses its technology to major firms like Apple Inc (AAPL.O), opens new tab and Qualcomm Inc (QCOM.O), opens new tab and is being purchased by Nvidia Corp (NVDA.O), opens new tab in a deal worth more than $54 billion, though the deal faces regulatory hurdles because firms like Qualcomm have objected to it.
SiFive today announced it is creating a platform for Linux-based personal computers based on RISC-V processors. Assuming customers adopt the processors and use them in PCs, the move might be part of a plan to create Linux-based PCs that use royalty-free processors. This could be seen as a challenge to computers based on designs from Intel, Advanced Micro Devices, Apple, or Arm, but giants of the industry don’t have to cower just yet.
