Canva, an Australia-based developer of design software, has announced the acquisition of Serif, a U.K.-based startup that produces the popular Affinity suite of design tools.
Canva’s market share is just 4%. Its graphic design tools and templates have won over everyone from social media influencers and teachers to couples making wedding invitations, helping to double its monthly users since 2022 to 190 million. But many users opt for a free, basic version, and one of its goals is to turn as many users as possible into paying subscribers.
Australia’s Canva Inc. said its valuation hit $15 billion following a $71 million investment, making the provider of design-collaboration tools one of the fastest-growing software startups in the world. Canva said it surpassed $500 million in annualized revenue this year, a 130% year-on-year increase, while remaining profitable. It now has more than 55 million monthly active users, up from about 30 million in June.
The graphic design platform Canva announced it is launching Canva Video, a new video editing solution, next year. The video editing tool reportedly mimics the same ease-of-use as Canva’s photo editing solutions, Business Insider Australia first reported. “Our mission is to empower everyone to design anything without any complex software or having to go to a different sources for different elements,” said Chief Product Officer Cameron Adams in a statement, “We’re bringing the same experience to our video editing tool.”
Graphic designers don’t often get a lot of respect — until the business owners that hire them try to make a simple logo design on their own. The problem usually isn’t imagination or inspiration (though it certainly can be), but the tools you need to create these visuals. Too often, graphic design software is a cumbersome, specialized tool that’s too focused on its features and not enough on utility.
