Story Protocol Developer Raises $80M Series B, Led by A16z, for Intellectual Property Chain

In a July 2023 op-ed, actor Joseph Gordon-Levitt argued that if artificial intelligence uses your work, it should pay you. That's the basic premise behind the intellectual property-focused blockchain Story Protocol, and it's quickly becoming a well-funded investment theme. On Wednesday, PIP Labs, the initial core contributor behind Story, announced an $80 million Series B, led by the venture capital firm Andreessen Horowitz (a16z).

Blockchain startup Story Protocol raised $80 million in a Series B round led by Andreessen Horowitz, valuing the company at $2.25 billion. The funding comes amid rising IP concerns regarding generative AI models' use of copyrighted material.

Story Protocol Works With Crypto-AI Firm Ritual To Train and Track Models On-Chain

After raising more than $54 million last year from the likes of Andreessen Horowitz and Paris Hilton's 11:11 Media, Story Protocol, a blockchain-based platform focused on intellectual property (IP) rights, says it will be used by the crypto-meets-AI startup Ritual to let builders create AI models and track their outputs on-chain. Under the so-called partnership, Ritual will begin posting its user-made AI models to Story Protocol to "prove that outputs like text, image, and voice are generated by specific models" and provide "advanced watermarking schemes that will give developers stronger security guarantees around provenance and traceability," Story Protocol said in a statement.
