Commonwealth Fusion Systems, based in Cambridge, Mass., was founded in 2018 by Bob Mumgaard, the company’s CEO. The company, which was spun out of a research project at MIT, focuses on the creation of nuclear fusion energy systems as a commercial power source for the world. Nuclear fusion is the same chemical process that powers the sun.
In December 2021, Commonwealth announced that it has raised more than $1.8 billion in Series B financing – its last funding round to date. The round was led by Tiger Global Management with participation by investors including Microsoft founder Bill Gates and hedge fund titan George Soros’ Soros Fund Management. Some of the funding has gone to constructing and operating SPARC, a fusion machine.
