MasterClass was founded in 2012 by Aaron Rasmussen and David Rogier. In 2020, CEO Rogier said that the company is "on the path" to an IPO. These comments should not be interpreted to mean that the company is formally pursuing or foregoing an IPO.

Masterclass is a subscription-based edtech platform that offers courses on a wide range of subjects, typically taught by celebrities or other well-known experts. The company has raised $461 million in venture capital funding to date. Investors include Fidelity, NEA, Baillie Gifford, IVP, and NextView Capital. A 2021 round of Series F funding brought in $225 million in new capital. Masterclass plans to use the money to bolster existing operations and expand internationally.
