Fulcrum BioEnergy was founded in 2007 by E. James Macias and James A. C. McDermott. After filing for an IPO in 2011, the company withdrew a year later, citing unfavorable market conditions. In January 2022, however, the company announced the appointment of a new CFO and VP. These comments should not be interpreted to mean that the company is formally pursuing or foregoing an IPO.
Fulcrum BioEnergy is developing a commercially-viable process to convert municipal solid waste into zero-carbon transportation fuels. In May 2022, the company's Sierra Biorefinery commenced operations, becoming "the world's first landfill waste to renewable transportation fuels plant." The company has raised more than $260 million in venture capital funding from investors including SK Holdings, BP Ventures, Cathay Pacific Airways, United Airlines, Rustic Canyon Partners, and US Renewables.
