Cognition’s news and media highlights

Artificial intelligence will no doubt change much about our world in the long run. But for now, we may be living through an AI bubble. Those seeking evidence of this might cite news of Cognition Labs seeking a $2 billion valuation, as reported by the Wall Street Journal on Saturday. Founded in November, Cognition Labs makes Devin, which it launched this month and describes as the “first fully autonomous AI software engineer.” It’s generated no real revenue.
Cognition Labs, a startup developing an artificial-intelligence tool for writing code, is in talks with investors to raise funding at a valuation of up to $2 billion, in a test of the investor frenzy around new AI technology. If completed at that valuation, the funding would increase the startup’s valuation to nearly six times what it was weeks ago. Silicon Valley venture firms including Founders Fund, already a shareholder in Cognition, are in talks to invest in the current round, people familiar with the matter said.
Today, Cognition, a recently formed AI startup backed by Peter Thiel’s Founders Fund and tech industry leaders including former Twitter executive Elad Gil and Doordash co-founder Tony Xu, announced a fully autonomous AI software engineer called “Devin”. While there are multiple coding assistants out there, including the famous Github Copilot, Devin is said to stand out from the crowd with its ability to handle entire development projects end-to-end, right from writing the code and fixing the bugs associated with it to final execution.
A new generative artificial intelligence startup called Cognition AI Inc. is looking to disrupt coding with the launch of a new tool that can autonomously create code for entire engineering jobs, including its own AI models. That tool’s name is Devin, and it takes the premise of GitHub Inc.’s and Microsoft Corp.’s Copilot developer tool much further, as it can carry out entire jobs on its own, rather than simply assist a human coder. In a video (below) attached to a blog post announcing Devin, Cognition Chief Executive Scott Wu demonstrates how users can view the model in action.
