Puppet was founded in 2009 by Luke Kanies and Teyo Tyree. In 2020, CTO Abby Kearns said "A path to an IPO is an inevitable outcome for us." The company was acquired by Perforce in 2022. As of March 2023, Puppet remains private.

Puppet is a DevOps company that uses the open-source Kubernetes system. The company has raised more than $190 million in venture capital funding from investors including Black Rock, Cisco, Kleiner Perkins, True Ventures, EDBI, and VMware. The terms of the Perforce acquisition were not made public.
