Marqeta was founded in 2010 by Jason Gardner. According to a July 2020 report by Reuters, the company has begun talking to investment banks about a potential initial public offering. These comments should not be interpreted to mean that the company is formally pursuing or foregoing an IPO.

Marqeta is a global card issuing platform, providing infrastructure and tools for building configurable payment cards. The company has raised approximately $525 million in Venture Capital funding from investors including Coatue Management, Glean Capital, Spark Capital, Goldman Sachs, ICONIQ Capital, CreditEase, Commerce Ventures, 83North, and Granite Ventures. It has been widely reported that Marqeta last raised $150 million in May 2020 at a post-money valuation of $4.3 billion.
