8i (not to be confused with 8i Acquisition 2, an Asia-focused SPAC) was founded in 2014 by Eugene d'Eon, Joshua Feast, Linc Gasking, and Sebastian Marino. The company has not publicly endorsed a plan to pursue an IPO. These comments should not be interpreted to mean that the company is formally pursuing or foregoing an IPO.
8i is developing technology that uses 3D video to capture and livestream high quality holograms. Traditional volumetric holograms can take days — sometimes even weeks — to process. The developers behind 8i's technology believe that ability to livestream holographic content has the potential to revolutionize not just entertainment, but the way we engage with information, presentations, and education. The company has raised more than $40 million in venture capital from investors that include Time Warner Investments, Baidu, Inc., Hearst Ventures, and Verizon Ventures. In 2016, 8i received a post-money valuation of $86 million.
