Ultra Safe Nuclear Corporation (USNC) has announced a technology breakthrough that allows its Micro-Modular Reactor (MMR) to produce three times more power. The company's patented Fully Ceramic Microencapsulated (FCM) fuel can now work with either high-assay low-enriched uranium or low-enriched uranium and operate at various power levels. This flexibility enables USNC to serve a range of customers with a single standardised design.
Jacobs selected to support Ultra Safe Nuclear Corporation to develop a UK demonstrator
Ultra Safe Nuclear Corporation (USNC) has chosen Jacobs to support the design and development of its micro modular reactor (MMR) in the UK. The MMR, which uses TRISO particle fuel and is cooled with helium, is expected to help transition away from fossil fuels. The UK government has awarded USNC funding to build a demonstration reactor in the country. Jacobs will support the front-end engineering design programme as a leading subcontractor to USNC.
Micro modular reactor could support transition to renewable energy
Seattle-based Ultra Safe Nuclear Corporation (USNC) has developed a micro modular reactor (MMR) aimed at replacing gas plants and supporting the transition to renewable energy. The UK Department for Energy Security and Net Zero has awarded USNC a grant of up to £22.5m to develop the MMR, which could be used for hydrogen or sustainable aviation fuel production. Engineering multinational Jacobs has joined the project to support design and development.
