Major League Cricket’s news and media highlights

The Major League Cricket has seen a spike in the fan-following of the sport in and around the United States of America. After a successful inaugural season, the franchise sport is back in the US, with refueled pomp and cheer among the fans, and ambition among the players. Cricket traditionally did not have too many takers in the United States, but things are changing gradually. One of the reasons for the shift in this trend has been the increase in the Indian-origin population in the country. That being said, viewership only comes with financing and investments.
Cricket has been widely regarded as one of the most popular sports in the world. With over 2.5 billion fans worldwide, it’s the second most popular sport, falling closely behind soccer. The sport has a long and complex history in the United States. Cricket originated in the early 17th century in southeast England. It was played in 1833 at Haverford College, University of Pennsylvania, Harvard, Princeton, Cornell, and Columbia. While the sport didn’t take off well in the U.S., it was quickly adopted in countries like India, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, Pakistan, and Bangladesh. Now, some of the biggest investors in the U.S. are looking to bring professional cricket to the U.S., where there is an estimated 63 million fans. After a slow start due to COVID-19, Major League Cricket launched and is currently playing its inaugural season in July 2023.
The newly launched American T20 league, Major League Cricket (MLC), has made a resounding entrance in the United States of America, a country captivated by Major League Baseball (MLB), the National Football League (NFL), and the National Basketball Association (NBA), with a potential to sell out over two-thirds of its inaugural season games, said Tom Dunmore, Vice President of Marketing, at MLC.
Major League Cricket has completed a $44M Series A and A1 fundraising round, with an additional commitment of $76M from investors over the next 12 months. Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella, a Sounders investor who also oversaw Microsoft’s $68.7B acquisition of Activision Blizzard earlier this year, is one of the lead investors in the fundraising. The $120M will primarily be earmarked to build cricket-specific stadiums and training centers in the U.S. Over the past three months, pro cricket projects have been unveiled in Grand Prairie, Texas; Redmond, Wash.; at the Santa Clara County Fairgrounds in San Jose, Calif.; in Morrisville, N.C.; and Irvine, Calif.
