Cameo was founded in 2017 by Devon Townsend, Martin Blencowe, and Steven Galanis. In May 2021, CEO Calanis said "Our goal at Cameo is to become a publicly traded company most likely in the next 18 to 36 months." These comments should not be interpreted to mean that the company is formally pursuing or foregoing an IPO.

Cameo is an app that allows celebrities to send personalized video messages to fans. The company has also partnered with Snap to create a celebrity-driven advertising platform. In 2021, Cameo acquired Represent, a merchandising platform. Cameo has raised $165 million in venture capital funding from investors including SoftBank Vision Fund, Tony Hawk, Alphabet, Amazon Alexa Fund, Morgan Stanley, Valor Equity Partners, UTA Ventures, GV, and e.ventures. A Series C funding round in March 2021 brought in $100 million and increased the company's valuation to more than $1 billion.
