Apeel Sciences was founded in 2012 by now-CEO James Rogers, Louis Perez, and Jenny Du. The company has not officially endorsed a plan to participate in an IPO.
Apeel Sciences developed and produced Apeel, an edible coating product that helps fruits last twice as long on grocery store shelves. The company started with a focus on avocados due to their short shelf-life but will be expanding into other fruits. Apeel Sciences has raised an estimated $360 million in Venture Capital funding from investors including Andreessen Horowitz, Upfront Ventures, Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, S2G Ventures, GIC Group, Rock Creek Group, and Tao Capital Partners. Per company press releases, Apeel Sciences last raised $250 million in May 2020 at a post-money valuation of more than $1 billion.
